CNC Turner Setter/Op

About the Role:
You will be responsible for setting and operating CNC turning centres to produce precision components to tight tolerances. Working from detailed engineering drawings, you will ensure jobs are set correctly, run efficiently and meet strict quality standards. You will also carry out basic maintenance and fault finding to keep machines running reliably.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set CNC turning machines using Fanuc and Siemens controls for new and repeat jobs.
• Operate CNC lathes to produce components to specified dimensions and tolerances.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, job cards and route sheets to determine machining requirements.
• Perform first-off and in-process inspections, adjusting offsets and tooling as required.
• Monitor machine performance, identifying and rectifying basic faults and issues during production.
• Carry out basic machine maintenance, cleaning and checks to ensure safe, efficient operation.
• Record production data and report any non-conformances or quality issues promptly.
• Work collaboratively with supervisors and colleagues to meet production schedules and priorities.

Key Requirements:

• Proven experience operating CNC turning machines in a precision engineering environment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and use basic measuring equipment (e.g. micrometers, verniers).
• Confident in setting tools, zero points and offsets on CNC lathes.
• Familiarity with Fanuc and/or Siemens control systems.
• Competent in basic machine maintenance and fault finding.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
• Ability to work independently, manage workloads and meet production deadlines.
• Good communication skills and a proactive, safety-conscious approach.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience setting CNC lathes for small batch and one-off production.
• Background in working to ISO or similar quality standards.
• Experience with a variety of materials, including stainless steel and exotic alloys.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement or lean manufacturing practices.

Qualifications:

• Time-served apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering, CNC Machining or related discipline (preferred).
• NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Engineering or Manufacturing (preferred).
• Relevant on-the-job training and demonstrable experience as a CNC Turner Setter/Operator (required).
