Gemma Lighting and Workshop Recruitment: Local talent for local businesses

Gemma Lighting is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of exterior lighting with a wide-reaching and complex customer base, working directly with organisations and businesses, wholesalers, architects and consultants. Gemma Lighting is unique amongst its competitors, able to offer a tailored and complete process for outdoor lighting installation, from plotting the lighting and working out how many will be needed, to creating a design and manufacturing the lights.

Because of the nature of the business, Gemma Lighting tends to have varying staff numbers. While it keeps a core level of staff, there is a constant need to be able to call in temporary staff quickly and efficiently. If they receive an order for 50 street lights due in one week’s time, the business must bring in extra people to ensure the manufacturing of the product is completed on time. Some of the roles have very specific requirements and as Workshop Recruitment requires all potential candidates to visit the office to register they can be fully assessed against pre-requisites in person, ensuring they are suitable for the roles offered.  Managing Director, Craig Manuel says:

‘We need an agency who can quickly get us staff, often at short notice. Workshop Recruitment know our business exceptionally well so they know exactly the sort of staff we need. Even when we’ve had need for high volumes of temporary staff, Workshop Recruitment always deliver. I really like using an established local agency because they have a large pool of local people they can call on quickly, and it’s reassuring they have met all the staff they deliver to us’.

Workshop Recruitment’s relationship with Gemma Lighting spans a decade, and during that time Gemma Lighting has exclusively used Workshop Recruitment for all of its hiring needs.

‘I’ve always liked using a local agency, Workshop’s fees are definitely competitive and the candidates they supply are high quality. When we’ve been interviewing for permanent roles, I’ve even used the board room at Workshop and conducted the interviews there so they are essentially like an extension of my internal team’.

Craig further explains:

‘I get calls from other recruitment agencies on an almost daily basis but I’m not looking elsewhere.  We’ve had our exclusivity agreement in place for nearly ten years and it works really well for us. That continuity of service means that Workshop knows our business – both its people and the environment – really well and knows exactly what we want. In the lighting industry there are agencies that specialise solely in lighting recruitments, but we find Workshop Recruitment can fulfil our requirements’

Craig goes so far as to say:

‘The service provided by the Workshop team is so good that even when we weren’t actively recruiting, they sent a CV of a candidate that ticked the boxes of someone we would love to have in the company and we ended up hiring them.  That’s the benefit of knowing our business, supporting us but never harassing – they know if I have a role, they will be my first call, I couldn’t recommend them more’
