Neurodiversity Celebration Week

18th – 24th March 2024 is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. A worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences.

So often, those with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and others are treated as though they face more challenges and have weaknesses opposed to strengths and simply different learning styles. Neurodiversity is not a deficit, but a celebration of the unique perspectives that individuals with neurocognitive differences bring to the table.

As an organisation we support neurodivergent individuals in the workplace and encourage everyone to foster a better understanding of their needs and how we can all support them.

Take a look at our top tips on how you can support neurodivergent individuals during your hiring process:

Use skills testing as a means of interview

Allow candidates to showcase their competence for a role by means of a skills test as opposed to a traditional question and answer interview. This will help remove the pressure and allow them to use their strengths.

Design your interview process to suit your candidates needs

Offer different types of interviews such as video, phone or face to face to make candidates feel comfortable. Avoid open ended questions that could cause anxiety, instead focus on specific questions related to work experience. Sending a list of questions ahead of time would also allow the candidate to be more prepared and in turn more confident.

Make reasonable accommodations

Some candidates may require extra time, short breaks or alternative test formats. Ensure you are prepared and able to meet these requirements.
