Do you sometimes find that you are attracting the perfect candidate for your role only for them to start work and things not quite work out how you had envisioned?

Chances are they still are the perfect candidate – something just seems to have gone wrong along the way. That something may be your Onboarding Process.

Check out our top 5 tips to ensure you get the best out of your new recruits:

Comprehensive Orientation

It can be daunting starting at a new company, even for the most confident person, so from the very first moment they start at your organisation ensure you introduce them to your company culture, values, policies and procedures as well as the people. Employees who feel comfortable will settle in to their position and become a productive member of the team a lot quicker than
those that don’t.

Provide Adequate and Relevant Training

Whilst an overview of the company is required, be sure to give specific and relevant training around the employee’s actual role. Familiarize them with the essential tools and resources they require to perform their daily tasks successfully.

Be Available

Whilst everyone is busy with their own role, it is vital that new employees are given your dedicated time. No-one can retain everything they learn the first time they see it, so be on hand and available to answer questions and revisit certain aspects, if required.

Regular Feedback and Check-ins

Providing effective feedback and checking in is essential to give new starters the best chance of success. Scheduling feedback sessions allows managers to provide constructive feedback on areas of improvement but also to celebrate and praise successes. They also create a safe environment for the new employee to voice any concerns early on, should they arise.

Ongoing Support and Development

The onboarding process shouldn’t end after the initial training period. Schedule appraisals and offer ongoing support and training to ensure you are always nurturing your talent throughout their tenure. Provide them with longer term career progression opportunities where possible, to keep them engaged, helping with staff retention.

The effectiveness of your onboarding process undoubtedly has a direct connection with how successful and engaged your employees will be, and their willingness to stay with your organisation long term. Putting in your time and effort at this early stage will, without doubt benefit you both going forward.
