Asking for a pay rise can be a difficult or uncomfortable conversation to have, but with the right research and a professional approach it can be less daunting than you think.

Check out our points below, to give yourself the best chance of success when negotiating your salary with your employer.

1. Evaluate your performance

How much have you achieved in your role? Have you taken on more responsibility? Try to provide examples/proof of your achievements and demonstrate the value you bring to the business.

2. Lead with facts not emotions

Whilst it can be an uncomfortable conversation to have, try to always remain professional and confident and stick to the points you want to put across in a business-like manner.

3. Conduct your research

Do your research into the current market and what others in the same position are being paid. Your request needs to be reasonable and in line with market value to be seriously considered.

4. Consider your timing

Take into account the companies’ current position, successes or developments. Similarly, consider how long you have been with the company and the loyalty you have shown.

If you aren’t successful in your request for a pay rise, make sure to ask for feedback on why your request has been denied and if it is something that can be revisited in the future. If you are given a clear path with timelines involved, then you can still see this as a success.

If it becomes apparent that there is no scope for a salary increase and your current employer can’t meet your career aspirations then it may be time to consider looking for a new role.
