In the competitive world of recruitment, having candidates drop out can be a significant set back in the hiring process. Understanding why this happens, and what you can do to avoid it can greatly impact your success in hiring.

In this blog post we explore some common reasons candidates drop out and what you can do to prevent it:

- Communication regarding timelines
Whilst it is understandable you want to explore all options and interview multiple candidates, it is important to clearly communicate what the next steps are and the timeline this will follow. Avoid using generic timelines such as; ‘We’ll be in touch soon’ and instead opt for giving an approximate date you will provide feedback by. This way candidates know what to expect, and when they should hear from you.

- Length of hiring process
Your interview process may need to include more than one interview for various reasons. However, try to start this process at a point where you can quickly follow up with second stage interviews to avoid losing top quality candidates to other organisations that have a quicker process.

- Unclear job description
Make sure the job description you advertise accurately describes the role and its responsibilities. Highlight the opportunities, company culture and benefits honestly to avoid disappointment at a later stage.

- Negative candidate experience at interview stage
The interview is the first opportunity the candidate has to form an impression of your company, in person. Ensure that the hiring team interviewing are prepared, welcoming and follow up when they say they will.

- Competitive market
Understanding the current market and what your competitors are offering can ensure you and stand out from the rest. Do your research before you advertise your role and be clear on the salary and benefits package you can provide.
