UK Labour Market 2026: What the Latest Figures Mean for Employers

The latest UK labour market figures show a softer employment market, but for employers still hiring, there could be opportunities.

The UK labour market has continued to soften over recent months, with payrolled employment falling by a further 26,000 between July and August.

While a reduction in employment may sound concerning, the changing labour market could present opportunities for businesses that are actively recruiting.

With more people between roles, employers may have access to a larger pool of active candidates. For businesses with vacancies, this can mean more choice and potentially less competition when

looking to secure the right people.

What else are the latest figures telling us?

The picture isn’t entirely one-sided.

Wages are continuing to grow faster than inflation, while unemployment has only edged upwards and the number of vacancies has broadly stabilised.

Taken together, the figures suggest that the UK recruitment market is more balanced than it has been, rather than being in freefall.

For employers, that could make this an interesting time to review recruitment plans and take advantage of increased candidate availability.

What does this mean for hiring?

A softer labour market doesn’t necessarily mean businesses should stop recruiting.

For companies with genuine vacancies, it may provide an opportunity to access candidates who are actively looking, broaden the talent pool and potentially fill positions that have previously proved difficult to recruit for.

Every recruitment market is different, and the wider figures only tell part of the story. What really matters to employers is what’s happening on the ground, how many suitable candidates are available, what they’re looking for and how quickly they’re moving.

That’s where having a recruitment partner with a strong understanding of the local market can make a difference, so call us today to discuss how we can help.
