Over the next few weeks we intend to introduce our team members in a bit more detail. We gave everyone the same set of questions and asked them to give their answers. First is Colin Walker, the longest serving member of Workshop.

Name:

Colin Walker

Company Role:

One of the owner / directors.

What’s your background?

Originally, my intention was to work in electronics. I spent a few years studying towards that end, but then realised I didn’t actually enjoy it! I took a big risk and left my electronics job and went into sales initially, and then ended up managing an office. I had to recruit my own staff, which I enjoyed. Eventually an opportunity to work in recruitment came along.

What do you do at your company?

I am responsible for company’s financial health, payroll, compliance and HR functions. I also manage one of our largest manufacturing accounts which requires me to provide onsite support each day.

What are your credentials/past experience that led to you being here?

I joined here as a recruitment consultant over 30 years ago, and was part of the core team that helped the company grow. When the previous owners decided to step back, they gave that team the opportunity to purchase the company.

What do you like about working at your company?

No two days have ever been the same. Sure, there are stressful times and challenges, but that’s what keeps things interesting. We have a great team around us and they’ve helped to make this a great place to work in. As an owner / director, it’s great to be able to make decisions that shape the future of the business.

What are the values that drive you?

Hard work, honesty and teamwork. Hard work speaks for itself – nothing comes to those who don’t work for it. I believe that honesty is essential in all dealings, and then everybody knows where they are, and there’s no surprises. I believe in teamwork, and it’s one of the things that makes our business successful. Recruitment can be a difficult job, and it’s great to know that your colleagues are there to lend a hand if you need it.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

My wife and I have four cats and a Labrador puppy, so time away from work is split between family and pets. I love to travel so my holidays tend to be in more unusual places – I am definitely not a beach holiday person. Also - anybody who knows me, knows I love cars. I’m not the best judge of them so although I’ve had a few nice ones, I’ve had some real bangers too!
