Junior Production Planner

Woking

£25K

Permanent

Our client based in Woking area requires a Junior Production Planner, the company has been through a period of strong growth both in the Electrical Accessories and the Medical businesses and consequently are looking to expand the current Production Planning team.

The Role

They are seeking a Junior Production Planner to join the current team of three people.

Prior experience of production planning is not essential. Full training will be provided, primarily through “learning by doing” and working closely with the current team. Any prior experience of MRP, production planning or inventory management will be an advantage.

The objective of the production planning team is to ensure that the right products are being manufactured in the right quantities to satisfy customer demand. This involves a combination of manufacturing product for stock (i.e. available straight off the shelf) and manufacturing of bespoke products to customer designs.

The production planning team is critical to the efficient operation of the business, ensuring the minimum stocks levels (i.e. cost tied up as stock) whilst achieving desired levels of product availability for customers (i.e. product lead times & customer satisfaction).

The role will include the following:

Day-to-day production planning & issuing of work to the factory:

  • Review Material Requirement Planning (MRP) outputs
  • Prioritise work for issue to the factory
  • Identify shortages that will prevent/delay manufacture & initiate corrective actions

Issue resolution & management of critical orders:

  • Investigate queries and/or overdue items raised by customer service. Put in place corrective actions to expedite manufacture and provide revised availability dates for the customer.
  • Investigate manufacturing delays or issues. Put in place corrective actions to mitigate the impact of delays. Proactively communicate knock-on impacts as required.
  • Take ownership for issues. Monitor & manage ongoing issues through to successful resolution.

Product data & planning parameters:

  • Review part demand and usage trends; past, present & predictions for future
  • Determine optimal planning parameters including safety stocks, lead times & manufacturing batch sizes
  • Update product data & planning parameters to achieve minimum inventory levels whilst achieving desired levels of product availability.
  • Work with engineering to set-up new products, including bills of material, manufacturing routings and work instructions.
  • Work with manufacturing to identify issues and opportunities for improvement, updating bills of material, manufacturing routings and work instructions as appropriate.

The Production Planning Team works closely with many other areas of the business:

  • Sales & Customer Service; to understand customer demand and priorities
  • Engineering; to ensure that products are designed & ready for manufacture, in particular bespoke items for customers
  • Procurement; to ensure that all bought in raw materials & components are available to support manufacture
  • Manufacturing; balancing work load across work centres in the factory to optimise through put.

As described, Production Planning is very much at the heart of all operations and is critical to the success of the company. It provides an excellent career start point, providing exposure to a wide variety of other teams & disciplines, and hence opens up opportunity for career development in multiple directions.

Skills & Experience

There are no hard & fast requirements for the role. However, candidates need to be naturally engineering minded and practical.

The key characteristics that we’re looking for are described below:

  • Strong analytical & engineering mindset with a great eye for detail. You will be working in an engineering & manufacturing environment. 100% accuracy is critical. Any errors in engineering or production data is costly, resulting in either incorrect manufacture & re-work, or incorrect stock levels.
  • Highly self-motivated & energetic. You want to learn & are curious. You will question “why” it’s done that way and have ideas to do it differently. You can take on task, make sure you understand it and then see it through to completion with minimal oversight.
  • You are comfortable coaching and helping the folk in the factory, answering questions respectfully and supportively. You will convey enthusiasm and help keep everyone motivated even when under pressure. You will spot if the job is not going right and get it fixed.
  • You are already highly IT literate, including Outlook, Word & Excel. You already use web and PC based applications in clever ways to work smarter & faster.
  • You can relate to mechanical things and are curios how they work. You aren’t afraid to take apart things when they break. You probably do some of your own car & bike maintenance.

Benefits

  • Great opportunity to be part of a central part of a UK manufacturing business
  • Lots of internal “on the job” training covering MRP, production planning, engineering & manufacturing
  • 26 days holiday plus public holidays (depending on dates between 3 & 5 days must be taken during the annual Christmas shutdown).
  • Portable money purchase pension scheme. The company will match individual contributions up to 3% of salary.
